Choosing the Right Fencing Materials
At Western Fence & Deck, we recommend pressure-treated wood for all fence posts when building fences for horses. This type of wood is resistant to fungus, rot, and insects, which means your fence will last longer. When we set our posts, we sink them 30 inches deep and surround them with 80 pounds of concrete.
For the fence rails, we suggest boards (also called planks) made from pressure-treated wood. Another alternative to wood is PVC vinyl, which is more expensive to install but has lower maintenance costs over the long run.
We also install low-tensile polymer fences and are an authorized dealer for Finishline Fencing. These fences are less costly to install than wood or vinyl fences. However, they require periodic maintenance to ensure the cables have the proper tension.

Gates for Horse Fences
When adding gates to your horse fences, you must ensure they are sturdy and safe. Horses tend to gather around gates, so the openings should be level with the top height of the fence. And we always make the opening size large enough to accommodate other equipment (tractors, wagons, etc.) to pass through.
