Reliable Fences for Horses Installed in St. Louis
If you own or board horses, there are several considerations you must take into account when installing fences for horses. For example, fence opening should be large enough so that a horse’s head, leg, or hoof can’t be trapped. You must also carefully plan fence bracing and eliminate other hazards to keep horses safe.
As a top installer of fences for horses, we know building codes and good fence design. Chuck Abrahamson, the Western Fence & Deck owner, grew up on a Wyoming cattle ranch and he’s been around fencing all his life. From designing and installing to maintenance and repair, he’s done it all.
When you choose Western Fence & Deck, you can trust you are getting the best. Our goal is to construct barriers that provide a psychological deterrent to keep the horse from escaping and strong enough, so the animal won’t be harmed if it charges. As such, we are proud to install the best horse fences for the St. Louis region.
Choosing the Right Fencing Materials
At Western Fence & Deck, we recommend pressure-treated wood for all fence posts when building fences for horses. This type of wood is resistant to fungus, rot, and insects, which means your fence will last longer. When we set our posts, we sink them 30 inches deep and surround them with 80 pounds of concrete.
For the fence rails, we suggest boards (also called planks) made from pressure-treated wood. Another alternative to wood is PVC vinyl, which is more expensive to install but has lower maintenance costs over the long run.
We also install low-tensile polymer fences and are an authorized dealer for Finishline Fencing. These fences are less costly to install than wood or vinyl fences. However, they require periodic maintenance to ensure the cables have the proper tension.
Barbedwire livestock fencing available.
Gates for Horse Fences
When adding gates to your horse fences, you must ensure they are sturdy and safe. Horses tend to gather around gates, so the openings should be level with the top height of the fence. And we always make the opening size large enough to accommodate other equipment (tractors, wagons, etc.) to pass through.
At Western Fence & Deck, we know the proper widths and safety precautions to keep horses safe. We also offer the option of gate openers that owners can operate from horseback.

What Customers Are Saying
"So I have a story we had a fencing contractor that we gave money to and ran off with the money… And then found Chuck and his crew from a neighbor’s experience / recommendation … They came in with a very competitive price, did some of the best work I’ve ever seen (quality carpentry), and we couldn’t be happier… The crew installed over 350 foot of picket fence and the quality of his work is just fantastic!!! His crew are great people too! Let me keep it simple, just use these guys you will not be disappointed."
"Outstanding! They were able to fit our job in ahead of schedule, and we're really happy with our new picket fence. Had a couple of really minor issues which they resolved immediately with a simple email. I'm in the service business, and I am really impressed with their professionalism and motivation to get it right. BTW, we have a dog and they accommodated us by doing one section at a time so my dog could still go out in the backyard without her running off!"
"We had a privacy fence built. It was a great process from start to finish. Very well built at a reasonable cost. We highly recommend!"

"Can't be more complimentary of your team and crew. The fence looks absolutely perfect and exactly what we were looking for. Your workers were incredibly nice and if they had any questions, they came to me immediately which I appreciated."
